What is Media Insiders?
Media Insiders is an ongoing research initiative by Symphony Advanced Media to help media companies better understand how consumers use, view and share TV, social, digital and mobile media. Active Insiders provide important TV and Mobile insights that help our clients make informed decisions about how they deliver content, entertainment, and information to you.
How is the research conducted?
Active Insiders run the Media Insiders application(s) from their Smartphone and Tablet to capture activity that is combined and utilized for research. Data is currently compiled from:
- The MI Mobile app which measures activities conducted on a smartphone or tablet, such as viewing, clicking, playing, downloading and more. The app also listens for TV shows using Gracenote library to identify which shows were viewed.
- Surveys: Insiders are periodically asked to share their opinions through short surveys via email or the MI Mobile app.
By aggregating members’ data across the U.S., we can provide accurate insights about how media is used, viewed and shared.
Participation and Rewards
Who can become a Media Insider?
A U.S. resident 13 years or older with a valid email address and at least one of the following devices that has wifi/mobile data:
Android version 4.0 or greater (not rooted): Smartphone, tablet, Kindle Fire HD (w/built in microphone)
How do you become an Insider?
- Complete the MI registration survey
- Download MI Mobile to an eligible device
- Accept the Terms and Conditions and license agreements
- Activate the app with your registered email address (use all lowercase letters)
- Done! You are now an Insider!
What are the benefits to being an Insider ?
Besides shaping the future of media, we show our appreciation to Insiders by offering reward points for participation. Points are earned in variety of ways shown below.
How can I earn points?
- Become an Insider by registering and activating MI Mobile
- Run the MI Mobile app daily, including when you watch TV
- The longevity of running the MI Mobile and earning TV Activity Rewards
- Referring friends and household members that become active Insiders for four weeks
- Receiving and completing surveys
What is 1 MM Day?
-A day of MM constitutes active usage of the device during a daily normal routine (calls, app usage such as music, retail, games, weather, web, calendar, clock, etc.).
What is 1 TV Day?
-A day of TV constitutes viewing of a full television program that is captured by our app. It is important to note that using the device (or apps on the device) that MI Mobile is on affects MI Mobile's ability to capture TV viewing. This is why we recommend and reward for having MI Mobile on a second device to ensure TV is captured if you multitask on your device while you watch TV.
What is an Insider?
An Insider is someone who registers with Media Insiders, downloads and runs MI Mobile daily capturing live and non-live instances of TV during a one week period from Monday – Sunday.
What do I earn for initially becoming a member and activating the MI Mobile app on my first mobile device?
The first time you activate the MI Mobile app on a mobile device, you will receive 50 Welcome Points.
How much can I earn and when will I receive my reward?
Click Here to know how to Earn Points in your account each week. Your account activity is based on your top two devices running MI Mobile.
Reward opportunities at an account level of activity are MM, TV, Two Devices and Tablet. Households with more qualifying devices require additional memberships (13 years and older) to earn additional rewards.

Is there any bonus programs?
A 4 week TV Activity Bonus is given to Insiders who remain TV Activity compliant for 4 consecutive weeks in addition to their weekly rewards.
What are Points?
Points can be accrued and redeemed for e-certificates, gift cards, and even Cash! You can redeem your points for gift cards to top brand stores like Amazon, Starbucks, CVS, TJ Maxx and Marshalls. You can also use your points to donate to charity or for restaurants like Applebee's or IHOP.
Will the MI Mobile application impact my smartphone or tablet performance?
MI Mobile is a small application (~15MB) which runs in the background of your device and is not intended to interfere with your web, app, wireless device, or battery usage.
What do I need to do to ensure the MI Mobile is working properly?
Once installed, you should never need to re-activate. If MI Mobile stops running, you will be notified by e-mail. Check Weekly Activity Status to see your activity and use the Sync Log on the Support Tab of the app to manually push the connection. Please note the app needs wifi or mobile data.
What information will the MI Mobile app need access to?
MI Mobile needs access to:
- Device and App History
- Wi-Fi connection information
- Device ID and Call Information

How does this technology work?
When MI Mobile is connected to wifi/mobile data, it listens periodically to noise signals for a very short duration and converts it into encoded digital signals to create a digital "fingerprint." Gracenote technology attempts to identify which TV shows and/or ads you may have watched by matching the fingerprint code to its TV program database.
When MI Mobile is running on your device, keep it with you when you watch TV with wifi/mobile data on. The microphone needs to be able to listen to the TV therefore if you can hear the TV, your phone can hear the TV--even if it is in your pocket. If you leave the room, take your phone with you--we are interested only in what you, personally, are watching.
Will you know which TV shows I'm watching?
Symphony Advanced Media uses technology from Gracenote, Inc. that is designed to match the sound samples gathered by MI Mobile to a reference database of broadcast and cable TV programs. We aggregate your data with the data we collect from thousands of other MI members. We never market or sell any individual data to anyone.
How do I know if a TV event is captured?
The “View Results” button in the MI Mobile app lets you see if the digital fingerprints of the shows you've watched matched the shows in our national database while your wifi/mobile data is on. MI Mobile might not begin to identify sounds for the first 5 days of use, and during this time the "View Results" button will show a blank list. After the first 5 days, this list is cleared every few hours, so sometimes you may see a blank list.
Will the MI Mobile application record my phone or other conversations around the house?
Can I use the phone or other apps while MI Mobile is listening to the TV?
Yes, absolutely! Please use your phone as you normally would. However the technology stops recording when sound is playing from the device. Therefore if you use your smartphone while you watch TV, we highly recommend having a second device (smartphone or tablet) that runs MI Mobile be with you to capture your TV viewing.
Why do you want to see my activity on Facebook and Twitter?
If you have a Facebook or Twitter account, we ask you to sync these accounts with Media Insiders so we can better understand how social media is used in everyday life. Media Insiders uses Facebook to connect with our members and send out periodic updates of new member benefits and interesting research results. At no time will we ever post on your wall, comment or otherwise interact with you publicly or privately via Facebook or Twitter. Your personal information is never shared or released publicly.
Please note: syncing capabilities are currently unavailable.
How do I un-sync the MI Mobile app from my Facebook and/or Twitter accounts?
If you choose to leave the panel, you can easily de-activate your Facebook or Twitter sync.

How do I unsubscribe from Media Insiders or cancel my membership?
We appreciate you being a Media Insider and encourage you to remain a member. However, if you would like to unsubscribe at any time, you may do so by contacting the team at firstname.lastname@example.org. You may also choose UNSUBSCRIBE in any email we send. Click here for instructions on how to remove the MI app from your device(s).
What happens to my rewards if I unsubscribe or am no longer an active Insider?
When you discontinue your activity or Media Insider Membership, you will no longer reap future benefits associated with membership.
Before unsubscribing or becoming TV inactive for 12 consecutive weeks, previously earned points will need to be redeemed as long as they reach the minimum required threshold of 500 Points. At the time of unsubscribing or after more than 12 consecutive weeks of no TV Activity Rewards, any unredeemed balances will be lost. Insider accounts will be closed. Without an account, you will not have the ability to earn or redeem rewards.
Does anyone have access to my personal information?
We do NOT collect or record:
- The telephone number or email address of anyone that you communicate with
- The content of your calls, text, SMS, MMS or other messages
- The content of your address book
How do I update or change my Media Insiders profile?
Once registered as a Media Insider member, you may update or modify your profile at mediainsiders.com or at any time by contacting our Panel Support team at email@example.com. Just click the update your information button at the top right of your Member page. If you are going to be away on vacation or out of the country, and will not be able to participate during this time, please let us know by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org.
How will you communicate with me?
We will contact you by email or phone. Please note: If, as a new member, you do not receive an e-mail message from us stating that your app is working, please check your "junk" or "spam" folders and then adjust your settings.
How do I change my password?
When you register directly with us, you are required to enter a password. You can always change your password at any time by contacting our Panel Support team at email@example.com.
I lost my password. Is there a way to retrieve it?
If you can't remember your password, click on the "Forgot Password" next to the member login, and follow the instructions.
